POSITION SUMMARY

The Perioperative RN Resident is fully engaged in providing safe, evidence-based, patient-centered care

in both the circulating and scrubbing roles within the Operating Room (OR). During a six (6) month

residency with mentorship from a Perioperative Coach, the Perioperative Resident RN demonstrates a

thorough understanding of the surgical process including ensuring a smooth flow of surgical procedures,

maintenance of a sterile environment, and collaboration among the surgical team according to the

standards of professional nursing practice. Nursing care is provided to the individual patient based upon

cultural, spiritual, and age specific needs.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Demonstrates effective and safe clinical practice as an O.R. Circulator and Scrub Nurse in the Operating Room under the supervision of experienced staff.
  • As a Circulator, manages the overall nursing care in the operating room and ensures safe patient positioning, accurate documentation, and communication with the surgical team.
  • As a Scrub Nurse, assists the surgeon by providing sterile instruments, equipment, and supplies during surgery, maintaining sterile technique throughout the procedure.
  • Coordinates the interdisciplinary plan of care based on current evidence-based practices, ensuring collaboration with anesthesiologists, surgeons, and surgical technologists.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and promotes effective team functioning.
  • Adheres to aseptic techniques and infection control protocols as required by policy.
  • Handles surgical specimens with care to ensure specimen integrity and safety during transportation, in accordance with policy and protocols.
  • Offers compassionate care that respects the expectations, needs, and individual differences of patients and families, including age, cultural spiritual and any other personal considerations.
  • Ensures efficient use of equipment and supplies in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions for use (IFUs), ensuring economical usage.
  • Demonstrates dependability, reliability, and flexibility in fulfilling work obligations.
  • Functions independently when clinical competency is demonstrated and at the discretion of the Manager, Educator, or Clinical Coach.
  • Participates in on-call responsibilities.

Work Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma.
  • Licensure: Current RN licensure In the State of Florida or endorsement.
  • Certification:
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintained.
  • AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) Healthcare Provider Completion Card must be obtained within 90 days of start date and maintained.
  • AHA Pediatric Life Support Provider (PALS) Completion Card must be obtained within 90 days of start date and maintained.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Proficient keyboarding skills with ability to utilize Health First computer systems for order entry, order inquiry, and patient care documentation.
  • Ability to speak and understand written and verbal instructions in the English language.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to function in often stressful environment with surgical team members of various levels.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure patient safety and surgical efficiency.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in emergent situations.
  • Ability to work under close supervision of preceptors, clinical mentors and surgical team leaders.
  • Ability to satisfy a two (2) year full-time employment commitment post residency.
  • Ability to respond from location to assigned facility within 30 minutes when on call.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work Experience:
  • One (1) year of RN experience preferably in surgical services or acute care.
  • Previous healthcare or surgical services experience.
  • Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Exceptional communication and collaborative skills to work effectively within a surgical team and with other interdisciplinary professionals.

Physical Requirements

  • Physically agile; may require walking, standing running, bending, stooping, kneeling, climbing or crouching frequently.
  • Medium work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, with or without assistance.
  • May require moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces, reaching out and above shoulders or over head.
  • May lift, turn, pull, push, or ambulate people and/or equipment with or without assistance up to 90% of the assigned shift.
  • May be exposed to inside and outside environments with varied temperatures, air quality, lighting and/or low to loud noise.
  • May require working with biohazards such as blood/body fluids and airborne particles following OSHA and CDC Guidelines.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform tasks.
  • Workspace may vary from open to confined; on site or remote.
  • May require travel to various facilities within and beyond county perimeter; may require use of personal vehicle.
